Does collagen make skin more elastic?

Collagen is a key protein found in the skin and is a major component of the skin's dermis, helping to support its shape and elasticity. As we age, the production of collagen naturally decreases, leading to skin sagging, wrinkles, and a loss of firmness. The reduction in collagen is one of the main causes of the visible signs of aging. Recent studies have shown encouraging results from using collagen supplements to improve skin health, particularly in enhancing elasticity and moisture retention.

Scientific Evidence

Hydrolyzed Collagen Research: Studies have found that oral collagen supplements can increase skin elasticity and moisture. Participants who took collagen supplements for just 4 weeks showed improvements in skin elasticity, and wrinkles were reduced. This research supports the theory that hydrolyzed collagen peptides (Fish collagen tripeptides) can stimulate the body to produce more collagen, ultimately enhancing skin elasticity.

Subject Selection: The participants were between the ages of 30 and 60, in good health, with no obvious brain, heart, liver, kidney, or blood disorders, and no history of long-term medication use. Participants had fine lines or wrinkles at the outer corners of both eyes, with wrinkle grades ranging from 1 to 6 based on the "Skin Aging Atlas" grading system or from 1 to 7 according to the "Wrinkle Reduction Product Evaluation Guidelines for New Regulations.

Testing instruments: Cutometer dual MPA580 (MPA580, Courage+Khazaka, Germany), Ultrascan UC22 (UC22, Courage+Khazaka, Germany), VISIA (Generation 7, Canfield, USA) YUANZI.

Duration: Baseline skin assessments and tests were conducted on eligible participants before using the product.  The same tests were repeated on day 28 after product use.  Skin elasticity significantly increased after just 28 days.

Clinical Trials: Participants who consumed a liquid nutritional product containing hydrolyzed fish collagen experienced significant improvements in skin firmness and elasticity after 28 days of treatment with BUTILIFE® fish collagen tripeptide. Specifically, the R2 value for skin elasticity around the eyes increased by 10.17%, the area of crow’s feet wrinkles decreased by 12.40%, the number of wrinkles around the eyes dropped by 16.68%, and the dermal density increased by 52.26%.

Mechanism of Action:

Hydrolyzed collagen peptides(Fish collagen tripeptides) work by promoting collagen synthesis, inhibiting collagen degradation, and boosting antioxidant enzyme activity to repair naturally aging skin. At the same time, they activate the NF-κB and TGF-β/Smad signaling pathways, which stimulate fibroblast proliferation and collagen and elastin synthesis. This process enhances elasticity and moisture retention, improves skin texture, and reduces wrinkles.

Collagen and Skin Elasticity: What You Should Know

While taking collagen supplements can help restore skin elasticity, it’s important to note that the effects can vary. Some individuals may experience more significant improvements than others, depending on factors such as age, lifestyle, and the type of collagen used.
